Legacy Batman: Pre-Crisis, most stories assumed there'd be several future descendants of Batman, each taking up the role of their predecessor. (Pre-Crisis, Bruce was raised by his uncle, Philip Wayne).Īs for an elderly version of Alfred, on Earth-2 (where they kept his initial last name, "Beagle"), Alfred was still alive even after its Batman had died, albeit quite elderly and long retired.įinally, in the late 50s and early 60s, Alfred would occasionally write (more or less) fan fiction stories about the adventures of "Batman II" (the adult Dick Grayson, taking over for a retired Bruce) and "Robin II" (the son of Bruce Wayne and Kathy "Batwoman" Kane, Bruce Wayne Jr.). Since then, Alfred's served the Wayne household as Batman's confidant and servant, and in post-Crisis continuity, as having raised Bruce- until the mid-80s, Alfred only began working for Bruce after he'd started his Batman career. Initially, Alfred was heavy-set and created as comic-relief, but was soon made over to his familiar thin self (after the 1943 "Batman" serial used a thin Alfred). All that and it keeps with the fan fiction cliche of the characters getting married (or being obsessed with same)! Though Batman wasn't swearing out-of-character profusely, the other fanfic cliche.Īlfred Pennyworth: Not sure if I wrote one for Alfred (this probably his biggest role yet-is this the first time he's actually been seen on-screen?), but here goes anyway.Īlfred first appeared in "Batman" #16 in 1943, and was created by Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson. ![]()
